Nutrition

The root CAUSE of most of the illness today in the United Sates is from over exposure to sub-optimal nutrition.  The good news is that with some awareness and better choices anyone can start feeling better and reduce the likelihood of developing a life-threatening disease.

“Yeah, so we have an interesting set of challenges that I think are really unique to right now. So first of all, there's almost a million new publications, peer reviewed published journal articles that come out on PubMed every year right now. How can any individual doctor, no matter how smart they are, no matter how well trained they are, how can they keep up? They can't.  The second issue is that it takes about 17 years for new information to make its way into medical education, meaning ... I went to Columbia for med school, I had a phenomenal education, but they even told us in our first day of medical school, that 50% of the information that we were learning was probably wrong, and the problem is we just don't know which 50%. And this is at one of the top medical schools in the country. And that's not because people aren't intelligent, and well meaning, and resourced. It's just because new information is moving faster than we can.  And then the third problem I would argue that we have is, many people don't realize this but 90% of our health is determined by social, behavioral, and environmental factors. Only 10% of your health is determined by medical interventions, and the truth is about ... those 10% are probably coming later in life when it's a bit too late, or let's say maybe you're not older, but you're later in a disease process where it's a little bit too late. We're not preventing, we're not always curing, we're kind of managing disease once it's gotten out of control.  And all of the technology in medicine, the electronic medical records on which doctors now depend to do their day to day job, right? We all have digital tools, that's what we use in medicine, most of them if not ... almost none of them capture these social determinants of health. So 90% of you, what you're eating, your relationships, your supplements, your exercise, your genomics, the microbiome, your health history, your family history, you environmental exposures ... none of these are capture in the electronic records that a doctor is looking at.  So as a result, a doctor is looking at this teeny, tiny sliver of you. And what do people, not doctors, but people do when they have limit information? Well, they act on what they can see. And so that means they prescribe drugs, and refer to specialists, because they can't take into account this whole picture. So again, we have all of this new information proliferating, a really slow turnaround time to get new information into medical training, and then we have this way of capturing information that's extremely limited.”  Dr. Robin Berzin – Founder/CEO Parsley Health - Interconnected Series

Presentation

What we eat and drink daily can support and vibrant, healthy life or breakdown our bodies over time.  The thing that everyone needs to understand and believe is that you have a choice.  As Brandon likes to say: “No one sits on your chest and forces you to eat sub-optimally every day!”

Golf is a game for a life time but what do you want for the quality of that life-time?  What you consume on and off the golf course plays a huge roll in performance and the quality of your life.

Some key concepts to learn:

  • Epigenetics: You are a product of your environment not at the mercy of your DNA.
  • Microbiome: What is it and why is it the key to good health?
  • No diet is perfect for everyone, what works best for you?
  • Why is gluten bad for everyone not just people with ciliac’s disease?
  • What is the difference between organic vs conventionally grown food?
  • How much water should you drink every day and does the quality of the water matter?
  • How is inflammation created by food and why should it be avoided?
  • What is “leaky gut”?
  • Do you eat to live or live to eat? What’s the difference?
  • Are you addicted to sugar? How do you know?
  • What is your emotional relationship with food?
  • Why should refine sugar and salt never enter your body?
  • Is dairy necessary?
  • What is the health benefit of artificial colors, additives, preservatives, and sweeteners?

If you are experiencing any kind of stress response or are not living the healthiest version of your life the first step to create change is to assess your diet.  Brandon has developed simple nutritional assessments and programs for clients to follow on a regular basis. Brandon is not a doctor and does not give medical advice.  What he does is give awareness to his clients about potential issues with nutrition, sleep, stress management, relationships, hydration, lifestyle factors, rest, and recovery that may contribute to stress response in the body.  He knows that the healthier a golfer is the better their potential to perform, learn and most importantly; play this game pain free for as long as they would like.  Since 2008 he has incorporated nutritional aspect in his instruction and has dedicated large volume of time and resources to seek out the best information to help his clients.
