Mental Game

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing.” Abraham Lincoln

Almost all golfers will agree that golf is a mental game but few practice this critical part of the game.  If a golfer has performance goals, they need to assess their mental skills.  When we don’t work on our mental skills and we make mental errors on the golf course, we start creating a dysfunctional thinking loop.

Same poor thought > same poor choice > creates same poor behavior > creates same outcome > produces same emotion > inspires same poor thought

Some keys points and questions to think about when working on your mental skills:

  • Most golfers underestimate their own ability to change. Are you willing to do what it takes to change?
  • Are you willing to work on your habits and train outside your comfort zone.
  • With variable conditions on the golf course, without a mental performance plan, your mental game may be controlled by the situation, not you!
  • Mental skills are learned behaviors.  What are you doing to develop your mental skill during your training sessions?
  • Do you have a pre-shot, during shot, and post shot mental strategy?
  • Every golf shot is an opportunity to learn.  Are you taking advantage of the opportunity no matter the outcome of the shot?

Brandon creates performance programs that include working on mental skills and mental toughness.  The great part of training mental skills is that it requires no athleticism.  The most important factor is the willingness change.
